Using Behavioral Economics and Human-Centered Design to Improve Engagement in the Child Support Program: Hands-On Workshop for San Joaquin County Staff

MEF training and technical assistance staff conducted two, two-day workshops for all (160+) staff at the San Joaquin County Department of Child Support Services focused on the principles and applications of behavioral science and human-centered design. MEF staff collaborated with local program staff to develop and deliver a curriculum tailored for San Joaquin’s training priorities. Attendees worked together in small groups to practice the behavioral diagnosis and design process from start to finish and developed their own behaviorally informed prototypes. In addition, staff practiced using behavioral strategies in everyday conversations with parents, drawing on the experiences of local program staff who implemented the Behavioral Interventions for Child Support Services intervention, for which MEF staff provided technical assistance and evaluation services.
