Building a Trauma-Informed Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Program: An Evaluative Toolkit

Experiences of trauma among low-income families are very common, and staff who interact with TANF participants experience high levels of secondary trauma. A new toolkit Valerie Benson co-created with Andrea Hetling from Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University and Mary Roberto Manhattan Strategy Group provides guidance and tools to assist programs in building trauma-informed policies, practices, and offices. Developed for the Vermont Reach Up program, the toolkit presents concrete examples that are unique to the TANF context.
