Valerie Benson joined MEF Associates in 2017 as a Senior Research Associate. She has more than a decade of experience designing and conducting program evaluations covering a wide-range of policy areas, including public assistance, workforce development, housing, unemployment insurance, child support, and child welfare. Her work blends quantitative and qualitative methods to understand program implementation, assess program outcomes, and estimate impacts.
Val has extensive experience acquiring and analyzing administrative records from state and local agencies, post-secondary institutions, community-based organizations, and commercial sources to support monitoring and evaluation efforts. She also works closely with evaluation partners to facilitate the use of data to inform policy and practice.
Val currently works on projects related to workforce development and human service programs. Prior to joining MEF, she was an Associate at Abt Associates where she served as task lead for projects sponsored by the Department of Labor, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Administration for Children and Families, and the Bloomberg Foundation. She previously held positions at NeighborWorks America and University of Maryland School of Social Work’s Family Welfare Research and Training Group. She holds a Master of Public Policy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alabama.
